Hi! Welcome to ShreesHealth J

It’s been quite some time since I have checked on you and your health. So how are you?

Done with Durga pooja, Diwali, chhath….and lots of sweets too!!! I am sure it is very difficult to say NO to sweets. But when we stand on the weighing machine after having all the delicacies, the result will make us say NO!! Reason you all know :)

Today I have something to share about overweight and obesity. When a person is overweight; diet and exercise will help in getting back to normal weight easily. But when a person is obese, it is not that easy.

Who is Obese?

When a person’s BMI is more than 30 kg/m². Obesity is not just high BMI it also has few more things to correlate. To know more, please go through my blog where I had given all the calculations to self-assess. Check it out here: https://www.shreeshealth.com/post/self-assess-your-body-fat

What is Obesity?

Obesity is a state in which there is a generalized accumulation of excess adipose tissue in the body leading to more than 20% of the desirable weight. In short, it is excess of unwanted fat.

How do you know it?

Well, there are many types of fat calculators available in the market; you can also check them when you visit hospitals or health clinics. The simplest way is, check your body shape in the mirror. You are the best person to think best for yourself.

What happens?

Obesity invites disability, disease and premature death. Disabilities like walking, breathing or working. It brings diseases like high blood pressure (BP), diabetes (Sugar), atherosclerosis and Coronary artery diseases (heart diseases), stroke, gall bladder diseases, osteoarthritis (knee pains) and varicose veins.

Why does this happen?

Usually Obesity is due to more intake of food than required. This means if I eat 2000 calories and could burn only 1500 calories in a day, then the rest of 500 calories would definitely stay. And that would slowly get deposited in all possible locations. And that results in an apple shaped or pear shaped obesity.

When does this happen?

Obesity can be due to various factors like

· Genetic where mostly both parents are obese.

· Age and Sex mostly women.

· Eating habits like munching between meals, less chewing time, temptations, eating forcibly to save leftovers and conditions like eating more food when unhappy.

· Sedentary lifestyle where physical activity is very less.

· Hormonal factors causing hypothyroidism, puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

Which is the best way to prevent it?

Here are some dietary guidelines to follow

· Eat less.

· No food or drug can reduce obesity; it’s you who can do it.

· Diet should be adequate in calories and high in fibre.

· Maintaining weight is a life long process, hence after 40 please appreciate low calorie foods.

· Burn your excess calories through exercise or any other physical activity of your choice.

· Say NO to packed and processed foods.

· Say NO to alcohol and soft drinks.

· Say NO to oily and fried foods.

There is saying in Sanskrit अति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत् which means

Anything in excess is a poison (Theodore Levitt)
